"The Wanderer Across The Facets" Series

What is this series about, which at first glance seems like a fairly straightforward — though action-packed — science fiction adventure novel?

Nothing new, really — it is about things as old as the world: the spirit of wanderlust, the desire to break out of the cycle of everyday life, the aspiration — despite enormous risk — to discover the facets of new worlds, and even worlds as seemingly familiar as Earth.

Most people truly desire "wondrous change" only in their dreams, and very few are able to hesitate for long when the greyness of routine hands them a lottery ticket of adventure, with uncertain rewards and outcomes.

The third book pays considerable attention to the problems of the modern world and Russia at the turn of the 21st century, and the perspective is given through the eyes of the protagonist, who has been absent from his homeland for almost 20 years.

This is a story about the eternal struggle between good and evil — though the author acknowledges that these concepts are highly relative. After all, every person, regardless of the country they live in, has their own good and their own evil, their own facets through which they must pass during life — be it short or long, depending on their fate.

This is an attempt not so much to answer the many questions as to once again pose them: who are we, where do we come from, and will we ever reach anywhere? Are we all decided by some mighty forces beyond the boundaries of the universe, or does every person have a say in their own destiny? It is said that to ask the right question is already half the answer. That is certainly true…

Even if the answer itself may not exist at all.

Cat's aphorism:

"A wanderer across the facets doesn't seek a home.

He creates one on every facet where he leaves a trace. Even if that facet is the entire universe. Purr."🐱

BOOK 1: "WANDERER BY CHANCE"
The story begins in the mid-1980s. A young engineer, Bogdan Domrachev, while on a business trip at a titanium plant in Verkhnyaya Salda, finds a strange object at a factory dump. Almost immediately, a stranger appears, introducing himself as Ingvar Yanovich, an employee of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. The stranger tries to persuade Bogdan to hand over the find, offering a large sum of money. Suspicious, Bogdan refuses. Events take an unexpected turn: the stranger tries to kill Bogdan to take the artifact by force, but the hero manages to disarm him. Accidentally activating the unknown device, Bogdan vanishes from his apartment.

The dynamic plot transports the reader from the earthly reality of those distant years into a fantastical — and seemingly parallel — world, shaped like a surreal hexagonal cylinder.

It turns out this world was artificially created, inhabited by various peoples (mostly brought from Earth at different times), and seemingly abandoned for unknown reasons by mysterious Creators.

The hero, an ordinary man, manages to orient himself and survive in extraordinary conditions. Initially, he is saved by finding himself in the Palace — a luxurious residence and a kind of control centre of the vanished master of this world, located on the northern end of the cylindrical planet.

But he cannot stay in comfort for long: due to his own mistake, he is suddenly thrown into life on the planet’s facets. One of the secret spatial transfer devices scattered throughout the Palace takes him to the opposite end — an ocean dotted with islands. Bogdan is forced to search for transition points that could bring him back to the safe Palace.

Through his travels and successive transfers, he ends up on different facets of the planet, where he must overcome various challenges.

Initially, the hero is driven mainly by the desire to return to the comfort and safety of the Palace — after all, he was cast out with minimal equipment. But gradually, he becomes drawn into a life full of danger, which also makes him feel like a man and offers unprecedented adventures. Bogdan decides to try to understand this strange place and find out who the mysterious Creators really are — beings who learned to create their own artificial worlds.

BOOK 2 "FUGITIVE BY CHANCE"
The second part of the trilogy begins 15 years after the events of Book 1.
Suddenly, the established, familiar "thrill-seeking for pleasure" — and the comforting sense of near-divine superiority over other inhabitants (thanks to periodic access to the Palace) — is shattered. The hero finds himself a fugitive, pursued by unknown and powerful enemies.

In this deadly chase, he gains unexpected allies — though it is unclear how reliable they are at first: several of the very Creators he had sought in vain throughout his years in the World of Facets.

However, the Creators, like Bogdan himself, are forced to flee from an ancient creation of their own civilisation — the so-called Sphere-Bearers (Sharoviki), a form of artificial intelligence capable of replacing human consciousness and taking over human bodies.
The storyline, filled with battles and dramatic situations, leads to only three survivors: Bogdan himself, Terp (the former master of the Facets world), and Monra, Terp’s former partner.

And they find themselves — not just anywhere, but on Earth. Somehow, this "Someone" is connected to Bogdan’s old acquaintance, the pseudo-Latvian Ingvar Yanovich — whom Bogdan encounters during the assault on the Palace. Ingvar Yanovich leads the Sphere-Bearers who invaded Terp’s world, and after being wounded by Bogdan, he flees to Earth.

Bogdan and the two Creators face a choice: either hide in one of the many artificial parallel worlds, constantly expecting a new invasion, or, following the principle that "attack is the best defence," settle the conflict once and for all — with an enemy they still do not fully understand.

At the end of the second book, the hero realizes that the answers he seeks can and must be found where it all began — on Earth.

BOOK 3 "THE ROUND FACETS OF THE EARTH"
Arriving on Earth, Bogdan, Terp, and Monra immediately plunge into a whirlwind of danger: their initial plan to appear incognito and conduct careful reconnaissance on enemy territory falls apart.

Terp is captured, and Bogdan and Monra once again find themselves on the run. But a cornered beast can bite hard — and a new circumstance emerges: on Earth, there are actually two enemies. And then Bogdan has a new plan: what if one of them could become an ally?

The implementation of this plan is almost immediately disrupted when Monra is also taken prisoner. Bogdan is left alone against unknown opponents, vastly superior in power. He has no choice but to take a risk and approach one of the enemies — the one he might be able to negotiate with — to free his friends.

He chooses correctly, but only partly: the ally, a renegade Creator and former secret master of Earth named Svarog, is himself in a position of near-outcast, forced to grasp at the straw of cooperation against a common, unscrupulous enemy. It turns out the Sphere-Bearers were merely puppets in the hands of an odious figure, ready to betray anyone and everyone.

Fate once again brings Bogdan face to face with the pseudo-Latvian who visited him long ago on Earth — the very encounter that began his wanderings across the Facets. He is forced to pretend to surrender and engage in a double game in order to infiltrate a strange entity — the Centre. It is a non-spatial system, the entrance to which was created on Earth long before the Creators appeared, and which is the very object of rivalry between those who wish to be the sole masters of many parallel worlds and, in particular, of Earth.

The scheme devised with Svarog falls short by a hair: the Sphere-Bearers, manipulated by Ingvar Yanovich (whose real name is Inglemas), rebel against their master, and Bogdan is once again caught between two fires.

Inglemas deceives Bogdan and, instead of sending Terp and Monra to a safe place as agreed, casts them into one of the so-called Unfinished Worlds with no means of survival. Fighting through Sphere-Bearers and human mercenaries hired by Svarog to guard his residence, Bogdan manages to reach the control panel from which Inglemas carried out the transfer of his friends.

A sharp turn of events forces Bogdan and Inglemas to flee together from the Sphere-Bearers. They have no choice but to escape into the very Unfinished World where Bogdan must find Terp and Monra. There are several entrances to this world, but the only way out is through an ancient Creators’ residence, whose access code only Inglemas knows.
Bogdan is captured by the natives of the Unfinished World, who had already taken Terp and Monra prisoner, while Inglemas escapes. He heads for the local Creators’ residence to leave the Unfinished World and seal the exit forever.

Bogdan and his friends are saved only because the chief of the natives has long been a US Army sergeant who accidentally ended up in the Unfinished World and desperately wants to return to Earth. A pursuit of Inglemas begins, ending in the deaths of both him and the American. However, dying, Inglemas threatens that his death is not final: he has arranged things so that he could return to satisfy his thirst for revenge — he has developed a "consciousness matrix" that allows him to be resurrected.

Bogdan and the Creators remain trapped in the Unfinished World. They are saved from their desperate situation by the unexpected appearance of Svarog, who, given the danger of Inglemas’ possible resurrection, proposes further cooperation.

Thus, Bogdan once again faces the question of continuing his wanderings across the fascinating and dangerous facets of the universe, to find the answer to who stands at the origins of all these worlds.

BOOK 4 "HARD NOT TO BE A GOD"
The events of Book 4 take place a quarter of a century after the conclusion of «The Round Facets of the Earth».

Alexander Artinsky, a relatively healthy retiree, spends his remaining years in quiet routine — occasionally dropping by a small café-bar called «Three Fat Men.» One evening, in the nearly empty bar, he notices a young man who bears an uncanny resemblance to a friend from his youth.

Suddenly, the young man is attacked by a mysterious figure who appears out of nowhere in the middle of the room. The attacker immobilises him and threatens to subject him to the most brutal torture. But he underestimates the old man.

Alexander intervenes and saves the captive. From that moment on, his quiet life is over — and a new one begins, where events unfold in such a way that it becomes very hard not to try to be a god...
